St Pauls Boxing Academy in Hull is renowned for producing some of the brightest talent in the region, run by Mick Bromby who has been a part of the club since 1970.

The success of Luke Campbell, a world champion silver medallist, has raised the expectation and hope of the local areas boxing talent. He will be competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games, vying to bring another medal back to Hull with him. Mick is proud of his young protégé, and sees him as a perfect role model for anyone that walks through the doors at the gym,

‘They aspire, and look at Luke, and you couldn’t get a better role model.

Mick went on to say; ‘when he first came into the gym, he was a little chubby lad, bit of a cheeky Charlie at first, but he’s grown in to such a respectful, dedicated, sincere lad.’

The club welcomes people of all ages, abilities, and all nationalities. It has members ranging from aged five, up until members that are in their 50’s.

The diverse ranges of people that come through the doors of the club were visible to see. Chan is a professor of psychology from Montréal, aged in his 50’s, and he has been coming to St Pauls for nine years.

‘Nine years to the gym, and he’s getting younger,’ Mick laughed.

To outsiders and those not connected to the sport it is not always obvious what people get from participating in the sport.
‘It’s about building confidence, the fitness element. They’re all here for different reasons, some kids are shy, some are confident, male or female; we have such a huge range. We all integrate; it’s like one big family,’ said Mick.

Some members come from all around the local area to take part in St Paul’s boxing club.

‘They don’t just come from Hull they come from all over. It’s them all working together as a team. All for one and one for all, I think that’s a massive part of the success,’ said Mick.
